Six months. Ian O'Shea, a human survivor living in the cluster ruled by Jeb Stryder, and Wanderer- more often called "Wanda"- an instinctively gentle soul with a taste for the non-soul society, have lived together blissfully happy since she was removed from the host body of Melanie Stryder and placed in one previously occupied by another soul. Melanie, likewise, having recovered herself, lives in utter bliss with Jared Howe, another survivor, and Jamie Stryder, her younger brother and fellow orphan of the souls' takeover. Life never has been simple for any of them, but, for now, while Melanie and Wanda are finally able to put behind them which feelings are their own and which merely linger after their time 'together', it seems the silver lining of their time is finally beginning to shine through.
Six months. The raiders, aided by Wanda's knowledge of her kind, have been bringing back hosts and removing the souls, using stolen hibernation tanks to send removed souls to other planets. The cluster of survivors is growing day by day, and the population-to-cave space ratio is growing so precarious that newcomers must be transferred to join the other, recently discovered clusters in the pitch-like blackness of the chilly Arizona desert nights.
Six months. Time heals all wounds, but it seems that it cannot soften hardened hearts. Anti-soul prejudice still runs high in the unmovable inhabitants of the cave, and Wanda and Sunny must face the downward glares of those who would rather give her over to the Seekers instead of accept her help. Dissent is growing between the two factions that seem to be forming, both gaining allies as their numbers increase with each soulless host. Jeb must hold the two halves together lest everything they've ever known since the souls' invasion crash upon them, but how long can the peace last when beaten upon by the waves of hatred?
The transfer of humans to other settlements hasn't gone off as perfectly as expected. The Seekers have caught wind- somehow- of the human transfers, and each transfer becomes twice as risky as the last. And when you're in a desert wasteland and too far from home, there are only two choices: submit or fight back. And nobody, not even those on the side of the souls, are about to let themselves be implanted with souls... Gunshots still lightly linger on the lips of the lanky desert wind. And the crowding of the cave is reaching a feverish pitch. But another trip could mean captured humans, and if their memories are absorbed by an implanted soul, life in freedom's arms could be jeopardized for the humans... Six months.
